Edward Small and Joseph Schenck released the film fifteen months before "advice" from MPPA code administrators turned into diktat. |
Like his brother, Nick Schenck, who controlled MGM from New York during the glory years from 1935 to 1955, Joe Schenck was a legendary Hollywood mogul. In 1933, he created 20th Century Pictures, the company that took over Fox Film Corporation in 1935. Convicted of income tax evasion in 1941, Joe Schenck subsequently returned to Hollywood, where he remained a major force in movies until his retirement in 1957. The story of corruption on the waterfront must have engaged him. |
